“The koto is a traditional dress from the Afro-Surinamese women or Creoles in Suriname. The koto was developed during the slavery period in Suriname; its special purpose was to protect the Afro-Surinamese woman against their masters’ sexual interest.
Different kotos exist for various occasions like weddings or funerals. The development of the koto as regular dress is not complete but it is still used in special occasions like the koto-dansi.
With the koto, women wear a head or body covering called an angisa or anisa . The folding of the angisa sends a social message, for example “Let them talk.” – Wikipedia

SANDOW BIRK: The Depravities of War
November 8 — December 14, 2007

Just as Francisco Goya drew on the prints of the French printmaker Jacques Callot (1592-1635) for inspiration, Sandow Birk now draws on Callot to create a series of prints commenting on the debaucheries of warfare in our times. Using Callot’s Miseries and Misfortunes of War as a starting point and casting their epic compositions in both America and in the ravaged landscape of Iraq, Birk’s prints depict the course of war and its aftereffects. Scaled up and utilizing the woodcut printmaking process to full graphic effect, the images are at once familiar and contemporary, while recognizable as drawing from traditions of art history. The project consists of 15 monumental woodcut prints, each measuring 48″ x 96″. Printed in collaboration with master printer Paul Mullowney of HuiPress in Makawao, Hawaii, and using traditional woodblock printing techniques on Japanese paper, the images follow the course of an unnamed, but recognizable war — from the recruiting and training of troops to the invasion of Iraq and its aftermath. Images depict the attacks on the mosque in Fallouja, the torturing of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison, and insurgent bombings of vehicles along Baghdad’s notorious Airport Road. As in current events, the initial invasion soon degenerates into guerilla warfare and chaos, popular uprisings, scenes of abuse, and eventually to the returning of wounded veterans and would-be celebrations of heroism. Like his predecessors, Birk’s prints draw on art history and current events in a polemical series that critiques the eternal and universally senseless practice of war and military injustice.

2012 Museum Studies Exhibition at the
University Art Museum, California State University, Long Beach

We were lucky enough to be asked to be one of the wedding videography vendors at the event – Kelsey got to man the booth while David ran around and shot some fun film of everyone setting up, the brides meeting and learning and some sales pitches from the vendors!

There were tons of yummy treats, killer ideas and great vendors in every discipline!

It was a fantastic show and if you didn’t attend, check the video out to see all the fun you missed! And of course if you did happen to attend – watch the video anyway, it will bring back the super fun memories!

And our Making Of Video:

Our entire backdrop was furnished by the Brookside Equestrian Center and Rose Wade Norton of Rose Wade Events – and what a sprawling backdrop it was, no wonder Elizabeth Taylor rose to fame overnight in the MGM hit National Velvet. She had the perfect location to do it! Yup, the hit was filmed there in 1944. Then to accent the natural flora and fauna of the venue, we had Nancy of Oak and the Owl design the floral arrangements and dress up the bridal table and sweetheart table.

This was then taken a step further with Erica of Twine Events, who stylized the entire design of the tables. She went for a simple, but elegant white motif out of a storybook fable. She was assisted with the rentals from Baker Party Rentals, who are fab folks we love. Then, not to mention the stationery artist Amber from Pitbulls and Posies who put the flair on the menus and the like.

We of course can’t forget our gorgeous models Mark Finochiaro,who has come here from Nebraska to make it big and be the model who is known as “the guy next door”. Then our sweet and beautiful Nicole Maxwell a fellow Long Beach State 49er, who has the style and brains to set off to the runways of Milan and not miss a beat.

Making our models look fab is our witty hair designer guru David Harrington and our makeup designer Kat Laskey. I want Kat to do my makeup every morning, her talent is beyond words. Our drapery was provided by Kismet Event Design, which gave it that extra pizzah, along with the antique decor from Barnhill Boutique to finish it off.

Capturing all this life and love, was none other than your favorite wedding cinema company Charles Lauren Films, David and I had a ball capturing the beauty of it all and catching Desi off gaurd here and there as you will see in the film. I know it’s a long list to digest, but as Rose from Brookside Equestrian says, the industry professionals showcased in this shoot and film are the most creative and professional in the industry, which if you watch the film you’ll see what she’s talking about, ENJOY!

Start off with a gigantic bridal party, all getting ready at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood. After their first look on Hollywood Boulevard, the ceremony took place at the Wilshire United Methodist Church. After the hugging and crying took a moment to rest, a New Orleans style band led a parade across the street to the Wilshire Ebell for the Reception. After seeing many Surinamese cultural demonstrations, and dancing led by the great band Opa Opa, DJ Aaron from Night To Remember DJ’s kicked off the AFTERPARTY in a hidden room at the Ebell!
